Which Decking Screw Should I Use?

Stainless steel decking screws come in many different varieties. There are different screw gauges, drive types, self drilling tips or type 17 tips and different head sizes.

When in a coastal area, and specifically within 1 kilometre of the coastline, it is recommended to use 316 stainless steel decking screws. These are a marine grade screw made specifically for this application.

Use self drilling decking screws if you do not want to pre-drill before you screw. These screws are generally more expensive, however the time saved makes up for the extra money spent and these screws will not cause splitting even at the end of your decking board

Torx drive and square drive are the 2 most common decking screw drive types. Torx Drive is becoming more common as there are more edges contacting the screw, meaning there is less chance of the driver bit slipping.

Always beware of inferior quality stainless steel deck screws as the heads can snap quite easily. This leaves the shaft of your screw in the timber which is almost impossible to remove.

Recommended Screw Thicknesses

Board width              Screw Gauge

70mm – 90mm            7-10G

90mm – 120mm         10-12g (approx 5.5mm screw shank)

120mm +                    14g ( approx 6.5mm screw shank)

How Many screws Will I need?

When fixing timber decking (generally a hardwood or treated pine timber) it will depend on the surface area as to how many screws are required.

For example; 900 lineal metres of decking timber laid across timber joists at 450mm spacing with two screws at every joist intersection will require 4000 screws

Calculation: = Number of Lineal metres x By the number of screws at every joist intersection

Example:  900 lineal metres x 2 screws per intersection = 1800 divided by .45 0.450 (joist spacing @ 450mm) = 4000 screws
